Guest Speaker: Rick Garlipp, Manager, Quality & Marketing, CPC Behavioral Health

Rick started his presentation with an exercise that highlighted the number of people with mental health problems: one out of every four, with only 33% of those seeking treatment.

CPC started as Children’s Psychiatric Center in 1960, but has grown into an organization that provides services for all age groups.  In addition to their center, they have a special education school where 250 students, ages 5-21, attend.  Their services are varied and encompass a wide range of mental health diseases.

They have recently received funding for a federal pilot program that will add nine programs to their services, two of which are: Armed Forces and Veteran Services aimed at lowering the extremely high suicide rate, and Crisis Services providing an alternative to an emergency room visit.

Rick then shared that mental health has a direct relationship to happiness, and that everyone can take a few minutes a day to promote positive thoughts, in one of the following ways:

·         Five minutes of meditation, focusing your thoughts and breath for just five minutes daily

·         Anticipation – looking forward to an upcoming event (family gathering, trip, party, etc)

·         Spend your money on experiences

·         Take a day for acts of kindness

·         Increase the positive in your work environment, decrease the negative

·         Exercise!

·         Pinpoint your signature strength and use it.

Rick concluded by announcing that CPC would soon be opening a center in Asbury Park.
